Watercolor on cold press paper
I've painted this cat before, but the photo I was using wasn't as clear as it could be. Three of four sets of the whiskers were dramatically lit against the background. But the fourth set, the set of whiskers over the cat's left eye, weren't visible in the photograph at all.
I tried sketching in the whiskers based on other cat photographs in my file, but the angle of the whiskers still didn’t look right.
So I took a ball of modeling clay from my children's arts and crafts drawer. Without putting in too much detail, I molded a little kitty head. I cut some short pieces of floral wire, inserted them into position in the clay, and bent the wires to look like whiskers. Then I was able to use the clay kitty head as a model for the whiskers.
